WebAssign: A Year in Review

With the 2013-2014 academic year ending soon, we took a look back at everything WebAssign has accomplished so far this year. Most notably we are proud of our tremendous growth with a 12% increase in revenue over academic year 2012-2013, continued partnership with the nation’s largest academic institutions, and creation of ongoing initiatives for educators and students.

As an employee-owned benefit company, we are committed to supporting and improving education instruction and student learning. WebAssign has been on a hiring trajectory, increasing its staff by nearly 150% since 2009. In fact, did you know that more than 40% of WebAssign employees have a teaching background?

To further support this initiative, in January, Jack Y. Narayan, Ph.D., was named Chief Academic Officer to represent the academic community in regards to education technology trends and evolving teaching models. In March, Barbara Illowsky, Ph.D., joined WebAssign’s Board of Directors, which works to uphold WebAssign’s mission to support education.

As part of the academic year 2013-2014, WebAssign achieved multiple milestones, including:

  • Partnerships with 15 major academic textbook publishers to support 1,132 textbooks in the math, physics, chemistry, and statistics disciplines.
  • Partnerships with 12 academic institutions to develop large custom projects ranging from lab development to full course delivery.
  • 5% growth in instructor accounts from spring 2012 to spring 2013.
  • 9% growth in student registrations for STEM disciplines.
  • Over 1 billion questions served since 1998.

In addition, the 14th annual WebAssign Users Group (WAUG) meeting will occur on June 26-27 in Raleigh, NC. This gathering includes more than 100 university, community college, and high school instructors and provides an environment for instructors to learn innovative ways to increase student engagement and exchange ideas with other WebAssign users.

WebAssign president, Alex Bloom, remarked on the year in review, “WebAssign’s flexible and robust application enables educators to design course material that supports their students’ mastery of a concept. We are already looking ahead to providing our faculty and students with a successful fall term.”
